Eventually, I calmed down, placed the weapon on the floor, and retrieved my baseball bat. I didn’t look at Junior, didn’t say a word. I was strangely embarrassed. I never lost control like that.

Ever.

“What was that thing?” he said softly.

I wasn’t sure I owed him an explanation. “Mutation,” was all I said.

“Mutation?”

I sighed. “Of the virus. It’s changed. It’s breeding these…things now.”

“The virus is fake,” he said. The baseball bat suddenly felt real nice in my hands. “It’s a hoax.”

“Says who?”

“Says the president.”

“You believe everything he tells you?”

He nodded eagerly. “He’s draining the swamp. Making America great again.”

“Yeah, I know, I can read your hat.” I looked at him, looked at him hard. “You think this is a hoax? Look around you, man! People are dying…thousands of them, millions. You know where I’m heading? To the hospital. My fucking wife has this shit. Last time I saw her she couldn’t breathe properly, because she was coughing up so much blood. I just want to get to the fucking hospital!” I punctuated the last two words by smacking the wooden bat off the floor. I felt tears coming, and let them fall. “Why are you doing this? Why are you so desperate to force people back to work?”

He looked at his feet. “We have to save the economy,” he mumbled.

“An economy ain’t worth shit if everyone’s dead,” I said, and that was the end of that. I left him sitting on the floor, and headed for the door.

Hey, that rhymes.

I was losing it. I had to get out of here. The hospital wasn’t far, though without the car, it’d be a good twenty minute jog, and I was tiring fast.

An idea flashed through my mind. Should I go back and break the guy’s legs? I should never have told him I was going to the hospital. What if he told his friends? Would they follow me, assuming I had killed old Pops back there?

No, I didn’t think he’d do that. I had saved his life. If only I could save the life of every inbred bible-thumping dipshit out there, then maybe they would leave me alone long enough to go and see my wife.

I chuckled coldly. Gallows humor, huh? Whatever gets you through the bad times.

I stepped out into the hallway, hitting the light switch, following the trail of blood left by the creatures. I passed a room where two bodies lay, their stomachs wide open, and kept walking. How many of these things were there? The government had stopped releasing test figures weeks ago, so who knew how many people were infected. Maybe even those who were asymptomatic were hosting those creatures? It was a chilling thought, and I didn’t want to dwell on it. At the end of the hall was a door, and I exited the penthouse.

The stair was quiet, and I made my way stealthily down to the first floor. I listened at the door for a while, but I couldn’t hear the protestors. Fuck, I mean I couldn’t hear the militia.
